THE BRAZILIAN ORNITHOLOGICAL SOCIETY
The Brazilian Ornithological Society (SBO) was founded in 1987, with the mission of promoting the scientific study and the conservation of
Brazilian birds. The Society is open to the participation of anybody, in Brazil
or abroad, interested in Brazilian birds.
The symbol of the Society is the Golden Parakeet - Guaruba
guarouba (Ararajuba, in Portuguese), a species of the family
Psittacidae
(macaws, parrot, etc.). It has beautiful green and yellow plumage and occurs
only in the Brazilian Amazon. Due to the coloration of its plumage and to its
distribution restricted to Brazil, it is considered the national bird.
The Brazilian Ornithological Society publishes the periodical
Revista
Brasileira de Ornitologia - the Brazilian Journal of
Ornithology, every six months. It is a scientific journal destined exclusively
to papers and notes on any aspects of the biology of the Brazilian birds. The
Bulletin is intended to promote the flow
of information among the members.
Besides publications, the Society promotes the Brazilian
Ornithological Conference - CBO, the largest ornithological event in South
America.
The Brazilian Ornithological Society has members in several
other countries besides Brazil, such as Argentina, United States, England and
Germany. The number of associates has been growing fast in the last years.
